We live in a society that demands that in order to succeed we must emulate our peers, seek out career opportunities, work hard to earn more money so that we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, this only works if you are married.
If you are a single mother, the perception is that you could be a business liability, and in some states, it is legal to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out the number of children there are. Business owners claim this allows them to refuse to hire single mothers, and therefore dodge paying health care expenses for their children. Or, if they do choose to hire them, to purposely pay them less to make up for perceived health care expenses. But, because it is allowable by law, this is not regarded as being discriminatory. Single mums rights groups throughout the country are challenging the legality of this type of practice.
Single mothers have been requested to get off welfare and rejoin the workforce, but the workforce is decidedly biased against them. Plenty of single mums work long hours to support their children, with barely any help from the state or deadbeat dads. Yet, they are hired at lower wages than single or married women, that is, if they can find work. They have minimal support and must hire someone to look after the children when they are working. If they get sick, the situation becomes acute, both in terms of earnings and child minding.
Some years ago, the government census estimated that over 10 million unmarried mothers live in America. Many of these single mums are starting to band together locally to support the fight for single mums rights. Child care centers, financial and social services are a few of the benefits these associations provide. Other single moms are approaching government officials to change laws that make it legal to question a woman about her personal relationships. Right throughout America, there are locally based support groups of single mothers that are fighting for single mums rights, so that every single mother, will have identical rights in the workplace.
